Increasingly, planet Earth is seen as a feminine figure. The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day to promote harmony with Nature so as to achieve a just balance among economic, social and ecological needs of the present and future generations. All must contribute to the web of life. We must find ways to produce food without damaging other forms of life.

The concept of living in harmony with Nature is relatively new as a UN political concept. The resolution designating Mother Earth Day dates only from 2010. Living in harmony with Nature is likely to be increasingly a theme for both governments and Nongovernmental Organizations’ (NGOs’) action. Strong efforts must be made to spell out the necessary shifts in attitude and values.

Women have a crucial role to play and must be fully involved in leadership. The educational system must prepare women for this leadership role. It is when women start to organize in large numbers that women become a political force. Thus, they help to create a harmonious society. Solidarity and organization are crucial elements. Ingenuity, patience, and determination are needed. Analysis is important. Knowledge of gender relations is an indication of power. Earth is our common home, and we must protect it together. The path may yet be long, but the direction is set.
